LOS ANGELES — Louisiana-based rapper NBA YoungBoy was arrested Monday in Los Angeles after fleeing from officers who attempted a traffic stop, authorities said.
NBA YoungBoy, 21, of Baton Rouge, was born Kentrell Gaulden. He was wanted on an outstanding warrant, KCBS reported. At around 11 a.m., police attempted to stop the vehicle he was in, the television station reported.
After a short pursuit, Gaulden attempted to flee on foot, WBRZ reported. Police reportedly used a K-9 unit to find him, the television station reported.
Gaulden was arrested and taken into custody at around 1 p.m., KCBS reported.
Gaulden was YouTube’s most viewed artist in 2019, according to The Wall Street Journal. He beat out top pop stars like Billie Eilish, Drake, Taylor Swift, and Post Malone.
Yaya Mayweather, daughter of champion boxer Floyd Mayweather, wrote on her Instagram story that her “day has been completely ruined” after finding out about the news. Earlier this year, Yaya Mayweather gave birth to Gaulden’s son, Kentrell Gaulden Jr.
In September, Gaulden was among 16 people arrested on drug and firearm charges while filming a music video in Baton Rouge, WVUE reported.
Gaulden also served 90 days in jail in 2019 after a judge handed down a temporary probation hold in a 2016 nonfatal shooting case, according to KCBS.
Prosecutors moved to dismiss his probation after Gaulden’s involvement in a Miami shootout in 2019 that left one person dead, the television station reported.
