COCONUT CREEK, Fla. — A Florida woman driving a stolen vehicle was fatally shot by police during a confrontation on Monday night, authorities said.
Brittni Muldrew, 36, of Boca Raton, was driving the car in Coconut Creek, the Sun-Sentinel reported.
Coconut Creek police responded to the scene of the shooting at about 8:30 p.m., according to the newspaper.
The vehicle had been reported stolen from the nearby city of Parkland, WSVN reported. Coconut Creek police said they saw Muldrew and a passenger identified as Levon Lopez, 49, of Boca Raton, and stopped her in a shopping plaza, the television station reported.
After officers arrived, Muldrew reversed the car toward them, police said. Two of the three officers fired their weapons toward the car, hitting Muldrew, the Sun-Sentinel reported. The officers attempted to revive Muldrew, but she died at the scene, the newspaper reported. Lopez was not hurt.
“I live on the back street over here, next street over, and I was over here with the dog (and) on the phone and all of a sudden, ‘Boom! Boom! Boom!” Phil Simone told WSVN. “I said, ‘Those are firecrackers.’ I’m like, ‘No, those are gunshots.’ Then, I come walking up here, and here you guys are and telling me what’s going on.”
The three police officers were injured, the Sun-Sentinel reported, adding that it was unclear how they were hurt. All three were released from a hospital on Tuesday morning, according to the newspaper.
The two officers who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative leave, WSVN reported. A K-9 was also injured and was being treated at an animal hospital, according to the television station.
Lopez was arrested on murder and grand theft automobile charges and is in the Broward County Jail, according to Broward County Sheriff’s Office online booking records.
