Former MLB All-Star shortstop Tony Fernandez dead at 57

Tony Fernandez, a five-time All-Star who helped the Toronto Blue Jays to a World Series title in 1993, died Saturday, according to reports out of his native Dominican Republic. He was 57.

Fernandez had been battling kidney problems and had suffered a stroke, the Toronto Sun reported.

Fernandez’s death was reported by Dominican journalist Hector Gomez of Deportivo Z101.

Fernandez won four consecutive Gold Gloves during his 17-year career in the majors. He also played for the San Diego Padres, New York Mets, Cincinnati Reds, New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians and Milwaukee Brewers. He helped the Indians to the World Series in 1997.

The native of San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, was honored on the Blue Jays’ Level of Excellence inside the Rogers Centre, the Sun reported.
