‘Gangsta the goose’ terrorizes Utah community

DAYBREAK, Utah — A goose that spent weeks guarding a duck’s eggs is now continuing its role as a guardian for the newly hatched ducklings.

The goose, affectionately nicknamed “Gangsta the Goose,” had been attacking people for more than a month as it acted as a bodyguard for a mother duck and its eggs, UPI reported.

Videos posted by homeowner John Canaan on YouTube showed the animal attacking him anytime he tried to leave his home, forcing him to equip himself with an umbrella for protection. Video also showed unassuming pedestrians being chased down the block by an angry goose, honking and squawking.

“He was flying about 800 miles an hour … it was like a missile,” John described one encounter to KSL-TV.

John and his wife Narelle told KTVX that the goose nearly held them hostage and forced their homeowner’s association to put up a sign warning people about the aggressive animal.

Five weeks after Gangsta first began attacking people, the eggs hatched and video showed Gangsta escorting a duck and her 12 ducklings to the water, KSL-TV reported.

John told the station that he believes there’s a clear lesson to be learned from Gangsta: “I think we live in a world right now where it’s pretty easy to dismiss one another and to judge each other. But I think if we’ll just take a little more time to take an extra careful look we might — metaphorically speaking — see a goose trying to take care of a duck’s eggs.”
