Police: Georgia man kidnaps 71-year-old woman, takes her to bank to withdraw funds

GRIFFIN, Ga. — A Georgia man is accused of kidnapping a 71-year-old woman at gunpoint, then taking her to an area bank and using her debit card to withdraw money, authorities said.

Bryan Deundre Overton, 29, of Griffin, was arrested Monday and charged with armed robbery, home invasion, kidnapping, aggravated assault, burglary, theft by taking, possession of controlled substances, possession of illegal items by inmates and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, according to Spalding County online jail records.

According to the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office, the victim said she was awakened on Monday at about 6:50 a.m. EST when someone threw a concrete paver through her window at her Griffin home, WSB-TV reported. The intruder, later identified as Overton, demanded money from the victim and forced her to surrender her car keys and debit card, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

“She heard a crash, and the next thing she knew, there was a male standing there pointing a gun at her demanding money,” Spalding County Sheriff Darrell Dix told WSB.

The man held the victim at gunpoint and drove her to an area bank, where deputies said she used her debit card to withdraw money, The Macon Telegraph reported. Deputies said Overton then drove the woman back to her home and left in her vehicle, according to the newspaper.

“My investigators were able to locate video surveillance footage of the stolen vehicle, and footage from the ATM withdrawal was provided by the bank the victim was forced to go to,” Dix said in a statement. “While reviewing the video they were able to isolate a pretty clear photograph of the intruder with the victim in the background.”

Deputies found the stolen car that afternoon in an Atlanta parking lot and arrested Overton, the sheriff’s office said. A passenger in the vehicle, Christon Overton, 31, of Riverdale, was arrested on an unrelated charge.

“The victim in this incident is blessed to be alive and safe,” Dix said. “Realistically, most crimes like this do not end as well as this one did, and the victim is usually injured or killed.”
