Golden retriever August turns 20

OAKLAND, Tenn. — According to Merriam-Webster, the definition of august is “marked by majestic dignity or grandeur” and for one old dog in Tennessee, the name couldn’t be more fitting.

August, or “Auggie” to her friends, recently turned 20 which, according to the Golden Hearts rescue, is a record.

There have been golden retrievers who lived to be 17 or 18, even a couple of 19-year-olds but Auggie is the first to their knowledge to make it to 20.

Normally goldens live from 10 to 12 years, WBIR reported.

Auggie had to be rehomed twice after she was born on April 24, 2000. But in her 14th year, she was adopted by Jennifer and Steve Hetterscheidt in Oakland, Tennessee, the group said.

Auggie’s age hasn’t stopped her or her family from being active. She’s traveled by RV all over the country and still plays fetch in the pool.

Like anyone at an advanced age, she takes a bit to get moving in the morning, but once she gets going she takes daily walks around the yard.

She even had a birthday party with her family’s other golden retrievers, Sherman, Belle and Bruce complete with a doggie-safe carrot cake.
