NEW YORK — A man in a wheelchair who fell onto the tracks in the New York City subway system was pulled to safety as a train was barreling into the station Wednesday.
The good Samaritans helped the man, who was in his 30s, at the Union Square station in Manhattan at about 1:15 p.m. EDT, WCBS reported.
People rushed to the track when they heard the man whimpering, the television station reported.
It was unclear how the man fell off the platform and onto the tracks.
Surveillance video showed one man jump onto the tracks to help, while other people helped lift the victim to the platform, according to WCBS. The man was hoisted to safety as a downtown train was about 10 seconds from pulling into the station, the television station reported.
“One man jumped right into action. He didn’t think twice whether he was going to go on those tracks,” according to Lauren Mennen of WCBS, who said she witnessed the rescue. “I was like, ‘People need this.’ There’s heroes in action, and I was like, ‘I’m going to wave my hand at the train, and it will all be good.’ I hope people just take positivity away from all this.”
The man was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
