COCONINO COUNTY, Ariz. — A man died Friday after falling an estimated 200 feet while hiking at Grand Canyon National Park.
National Park Service officials confirmed to KNXV-TV that rangers located the body of the 44-year-old man, whose name has not been released publicly, about 200 feet down on the North Rim after he apparently fell from the rim west of the Bright Angel Point trail.
Officials said the man was off the trail when he accidentally fell off the edge of the rim, USA Today reported.
Responding rangers found the man’s body just after 3:30 p.m., according to the newspaper.
According to KNXV, the National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating.
The fatality comes after two people died in unrelated falls while hiking in the U.S. in recent weeks, including a woman who fell to her death in Oregon on Aug. 19 and a man who died in New Hampshire the following day, USA Today reported.
