The Richland Hills Police Department said in a news release that its officers were called to a home just before 8 a.m. on Jan. 1 for a report of a stabbing. When officers arrived, they found an 8-year-old who had been stabbed to death.

Police identified the suspect, 62-year-old Phillip Hughes, as the victim’s grandfather. Hughes was located near the home and was arrested without incident. Police said he was taken to the police department, where he is being held on charges of capital murder.

Police told KDFW that they recovered an “edged blade weapon” they believe was used in the murder.

“We have lots of questions, just like everyone else has,” Richland Hills police officer Sheena McEachran told KDFW. “Throughout the investigation, we’ll hopefully be able to answer all the questions and why this tragedy occurred. There’s not a lot of words right now to describe a lot of the feelings involved, but we are doing everything we can to investigate this fully and making sure we bring justice for the family.”

Police said their investigation is ongoing, KXAS reported.
