Swedish furniture giant Ikea announced Thursday it was expanding a program that allows customers to sell its furniture back to the company.
On its website, Ikea announced 37 stores will be participating in the “Buy Back & Resell” program. The stores are across the country and include locations in Atlanta, Brooklyn, Charlotte, Memphis, Pittsburgh and San Diego. The company said it is in the process of adding additional stores in cities like Orlando, Jacksonville, and Columbus.
Ikea first announced it was testing the program at a single store in a Philadelphia suburb in 2021, CNBC reported at the time.
Ikea told CNN the program only applies to personally-used furniture from Ikea that is fully assembled and functional. Furniture that has been altered or modified will not be accepted. Accepted items include office drawer cabinets, bookcases, tables, desks, and chairs without upholstery. The program does not include non-Ikea-branded products or beds, sofas, leather products or electrical appliances.
Ikea said the product’s buyback price is based on its condition, age and functionality. Customers are asked to fill out an online form to get a quote for their items before going to the store for the sellback.
Customers do need an “Ikea Family” membership to take part in the program.
