In an extensive recall, nearly 1,000 cases of salmonella have been reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention due to contaminated onions.

The sweet, yellow, red and white onions were produced by Thomson International Inc. of Bakersfield, California, and sold at a number of retailers across the country, including Kroger, Publix, Ralph’s, Trader Joe’s and Walmart.

So far, consumers across 47 states have reported ingesting the infected vegetables, and 116 have been hospitalized, according to the CDC.

Salsas, dips, pasta salads and a number of other items have been recalled from grocers and restaurants nationwide, and now meal kit delivery service HelloFresh is asking its customers to toss any onions that were included in recipes distributed between May and July.

People infected with salmonella may experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

Customers who have already consumed HelloFresh meals with onions during the specified time frame should not be alarmed if they did not experience symptoms. Salmonella bacteria is killed when thoroughly cooked at 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
