ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A Florida community is mourning the loss of a high school quarterback who was killed while trying to help a friend who was stuck on the side of the road.
Nick Miner, 18, was helping to tow a friend’s pickup truck out of a roadside ditch with his Ford F-150 early Sunday morning when a Honda sedan crashed into him, WFTV reported. The truck partially shattered, rolled over, and pinned Miner beneath it.
A memorial now stands on the side of the road, behind some pieces of the shattered F-150 left behind on the road.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers told WFTV that the driver of the Honda did not see either pickup truck. Two women who were standing outside of the vehicles were hit when the trucks flipped, and were taken to the hospital with what were described as serious, but not life-threatening, injuries.
Miner was a three-year starting quarterback for East River High School. In a statement, the school’s principal said, “I know I speak for our entire East River High community when I express the grief felt at the loss of one of our own.” The principal said grief counselors would be available at the school for students and staff on Monday.
Troopers have not said what, if any, charges the driver of the Honda may face, WFTV reported.
Miner’s family has created a GoFundMe page in Nick’s honor to raise money for funeral costs.
