‘I can’t believe I did this’: Girl, 13, dies in Massachusetts crash; driver charged

PEMBROKE, Mass. — A 13-year-old girl died after a two-car crash Sunday in Massachusetts, authorities said. Another 13-year-old girl and a 50-year-old woman are in critical condition, according to Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz.

The accident happened Sunday in Pembroke, WFXT reported. Fire personnel from Hanover and Marshfield responded.

Gregory Goodsell, 31, of Marshfield, was arrested on the scene and brought to South Shore Hospital for evaluation.

Goodsell is charged with OUI liquor causing serious injury, possession of open alcohol container in a motor vehicle, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, marked lanes violation, speeding, failure to stop or yield at a signal, and improper passing.

According to court documents, the three victims were in a Subaru that sustained heavy damage to the passenger side, while Goodsell drove a Ford truck that had heavy front-end damage.

Court documents report that Goodsell was slurring his speech, had glassy, blood-shot eyes, and smelled of alcohol when an officer arrived. He allegedly told police, “I know I shouldn’t have been driving ... I can’t believe I did this ... I drank way too much, I’m so sorry,” according to documents. He also admitted to using cocaine Saturday night and into the early morning before driving, according to court documents.

Goodsell was arrested and, unable to walk on his own was assisted to a police cruiser, according to documents.

Witnesses said they saw Goodsell driving at a high speed, passing cars, driving through red lights and swerving, WFXT reported. One witness said they saw Goodsell “traveling at the speed of lightning,” the television station reported.

A half-empty bottle of Jameson Whiskey was found on the rear seat of Goodsell’s truck, along with an empty beer can, according to court documents.

Goodsell was arraigned Monday and is being held without bail. A dangerousness hearing is scheduled for Jan. 3, 2020.
