Kansas City Chiefs cut CB Damon Arnette after Las Vegas arrest

The Kansas City Chiefs released Damon Arnette on Saturday after the cornerback was arrested in Las Vegas on gun and drug charges.

Arnette, 25, was arrested Friday night and charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, carrying or concealing a gun without a permit, possession of marijuana or cannabis and possession of a class one or two-level controlled substance, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, which cited jail records.

In Las Vegas, it is illegal to smoke or consume marijuana outside of a private home, the newspaper reported.

Arnette, who spent the last two seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders, had signed a futures contract with the Chiefs, ESPN reported. The Jan. 20 contract included a commitment by Arnette to intense counseling and zero tolerance, NFL.com reported.

The 2020 first-round draft pick of the Raiders out of Ohio State was released in November after a video emerged of him threatening someone with a gun, the Review-Journal reported.

Arnette’s contract with the Chiefs was set to begin in March, ESPN reported. He was not with the team as it prepared for Sunday’s AFC Championship Game against the Cincinnati Bengals at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri.

According to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson Lt. Justin Byers, Arnette was arrested with Markell Surrell, 20, at about 5:45 p.m. PST at the Park MGM casino in Las Vegas, the Review-Journal reported.

Surrell was charged with carrying or concealing a weapon without a permit.

Arnette played 13 games for the Raiders in 2020-2021, making seven starts.

He was sued twice during 2021, according to court records.

Sonny Flores, a valet at the Aria Resort & Casino sued Arnette in June 2021, accusing him of attacking him in May, Flores filed a motion to drop the case in December 2021, the Review-Journal reported.

On Oct. 5, 2021, Yaneth Coromoto Casique sued Arnette in connection with a crash that occurred in 2020. Police in Henderson, Nevada, cited Arnette with failure to stop at the scene of a crash and improper lane change, both misdemeanors, according to the newspaper.

That lawsuit is ongoing.
