Kelly Clarkson will appear with an eye patch on her talk show, “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” in a number of episodes in random order, the talk show host said.
During Wednesday’s episode, Clarkson joked with guest Common about her new look.
“I’m sorry I look like a pirate,” she said. “I hurt my eye, and I have to wear it. It’s ridiculous. You’re being interviewed by a pirate today.”
Common reassured Clarkson, telling her she looked “fly.”
But why the eye patch?
Clarkson told NBCLA that she’s highly allergic to dust and was filming for “The Voice” when something in the dusty building got in her eye.
“I told my makeup artist that day, 'Man, something is in my [eye]. It’s bothering me," she said. "Well, something got in there, maybe cut it, did something. It got infected. It looked like ‘Hitch,’ you know that movie?” she said, gesturing to show that it became inflamed.
“When it first happened, it was so puffy, and I was like, ‘What am I supposed to do?’” she said.
Clarkson decided to keep working despite the inconvenience. She even notes in a promo video for her show that she wouldn’t let the eye patch hold her back.

During her interview with NBALA, Clarkson revealed that because multiple shows are taped in one day, she’ll appear on TV with the eye patch in multiple episodes of her show. She also said the shows don’t appear in the same order in which they’re filmed, so viewers might be confused.
“We did six shows total because we did two shows a day. Three days I had to wear a patch. Those are not consecutive, man,” she said. “I’m gonna randomly be wearing a patch, like on a random Tuesday, and people are going to be like, ‘She needs to figure out her eye situation. It keeps coming back.’”
Clarkson, who premiered season two of her show on Monday, joked that she considered making the eye patch her new look but said she decided to let Madonna’s iconic eye patch look keep its historic value.
At the end of Monday’s episode, Clarkson belted a cover of “Adore You" by Harry Styles, and she did so with the eye patch and all.
