‘Law & Order’ returning to TV for 21st season after 11-year hiatus

The show that put the “dun-dun” in procedural crime drama is returning to television following an 11-year hiatus.

Wolf Entertainment confirmed Tuesday that the original “Law & Order” is set to return to NBC for its 21st season, more than a decade after it last allowed viewers to explore two separate, yet equally important groups: “the police who investigate crimes and the district attorneys who prosecute the offenders.”

“There are very few things in life that are literally dreams come true. This is mine,” Dick Wolf, creator and executive producer of the multibillion dollar franchise, said in a prepared statement.

It was not immediately clear if the fan-favorite show’s return will be green-lit for a mid-season debut, or if viewers must wait until the 2022-23 TV season.

Meanwhile, some former cast members are expected to reprise their original roles, but it remained unclear Tuesday which ones will join the revival, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Showrunner Rick Eid, Arthur Forney and Peter Jankowski will executive produce alongside Wolf, according to the production company.

The flagship show spawned spinoffs Criminal Intent, Trial by Jury, L.A., True Crime, Organized Crime and Special Victims Unit, the longest-running primetime live-action show in American TV history, THR reported.

Nominated for 50 Emmy awards during its original two-decade run, the show took Best Drama Series honors in 1997, Wolf Entertainment confirmed.

“Law & Order is quite simply one of the most iconic shows in television history, and the idea of continuing its legacy and partnering with Dick on an all-new season is nothing short of exhilarating,” Susan Rovner, chairperson of entertainment content at NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, said in a prepared statement.
