LAKE MAGGIORE, Italy — At least 13 people were killed and two children were injured Sunday when a cable car plunged to the ground in Northern Italy.

Update 1:35 p.m. May 23: It appears a cable broke, sending the car careening until it hit a pylon and fell to the ground, Stress Mayor Marcella Severino said.
When the car hit the ground it overturned tow or three times before hitting some trees.
The Italian government formed a commission to investigate the accident.
Original report: Rescue crews were searching for more victims among the wreckage. It is believed there were 15 people in the cable car at the time.

The cause is being investigated.
The cable line was renovated in 2016 and had recently reopened after coronavirus lockdowns. The Stresa-Mottarone cable car line is 20-minute trip up the side of the mountain with picturesque views of seven lakes at the peak.
