For the first time since 2015, there was only one contestant in the final round of “Jeopardy!” that aired Tuesday. It had nothing to do with the coronavirus or social distancing. Returning champion Kevin Walsh was alone in the final round of the popular television game show because his two challengers, Alex Switzky and Natt Supab, ended the second round with either zero points or a negative balance, disqualifying them from competing, Entertainment Weekly reported.

“The stage looks like a very lonely place right now,” host Alex Trebek said at the beginning of Final Jeopardy! “I cannot recall the last time we only had one player in Final Jeopardy!”

Walsh’s answer for the final round clue in “literary pronouns” was, “Thanks to a horror film, this novel returned to the bestseller lists in 2017, some 30 years after reaching No. 1.”

The question, which Walsh answered correctly, was “What is 'It’?”

That gave Walsh $18,800 on Tuesday and a four-day total of $81,700 in prize money, CNN reported.

The last time there was only one contestant on Final Jeopardy! was on a show that aired March 12, 2015. That is when Kristin Sausville, a 34-year-old stay-at-home mom from Delaware, found herself alone on stage, People reported.

“This was not one of our greatest days,” Trebek deadpanned. “Kristin, I think you’re going to win.”
