Nicholas Firkus, 39, was convicted of first-degree murder and second-degree murder on Friday for the death of his wife, Heidi Firkus, on April 25, 2010, according to The Associated Press.

Nicholas said his wife was accidentally shot after he had struggled with a burglar during a home invasion, according to the AP.

Prosecutors claimed that Nicholas shot Heidi because he reportedly had not told he about their financial troubles including $18,000 in credit card debt and late mortgage payments, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune said according to the AP.

According to the AP, Nicholas and Heidi were reportedly supposed to be evicted the following day.

St. Paul Police Department reopened the case in 2019 after it went cold and asked the FBI for assistance, according to the AP. Nicholas was charged two years later in 2021 after the discovery of new evidence.

Nicholas is expected to be sentenced on April 13, according to the AP.

No further information has been released.
