OCEAN CITY, Md. — The Maryland man who jumped off a bridge into a bay to save the life of a drowning toddler has been awarded the Carnegie Medal, an honor recognizing civilians who put their lives at risk to save others, The Associated Press reported.
Jonathan Bauer and his teenage daughter were involved in a crash on a bridge in Ocean City in May. After checking that daughter was OK, Bauer raced into action after noticing a car seat had been thrown from a truck into the water below, WRC reported at the time.
Bauer jumped into the water to save the girl, who made a full recovery, WUSA reported.
Bauer had originally wanted to remain anonymous, but he later came forward and met with first responders who were at the scene of the crash, The Daily Times reported.
The Carnegie Medal is awarded by the Carnegie Hero Fund, whose mission is “to recognize and support those who perform acts of heroism in civilian life in the United States and Canada.”
In addition to the medal, Bauer will also receive a financial grant from the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission.
