TWINING, Mich. — A 67-year-old Michigan man has been charged with attempted murder, after authorities say he set a booby trap targeting state troopers he was expecting to question him in a separate crime.
Roger Allan Broadstone of Twining was identified as a suspect after more than $1,500 worth of fraudulent credit card purchases were reported at a West Branch Walmart on Jan. 19, WNEM reported.
When Michigan State Police troopers went to Broadstone’s home the following day to question him, he refused to speak with them and said they would need a search warrant to proceed.
Troopers obtained the warrant and returned to the residence, but Broadstone barricaded himself inside the home, resisted troopers and “set up a booby trap and other preparations to harm the troopers,” WNEM reported.
According to WJRT, Broadstone was arraigned Monday on the following charges stemming from the incident with police:
• Five counts of attempted murder.
• One count of disarming a police officer.
• One count of attempting to disarm a police officer.
• Four counts of resisting police.
• One count of resisting police causing injury.
• One count of placing an offensive substance with intent to injure.
• One count of arson for preparing to burn a building.
• Possession of ammunition by a felon.
• One count of malicious destruction of property.
Meanwhile, Broadstone was also arraigned Jan. 25 on one count of using a computer to commit a crime and one count of illegally using a financial transaction device, both related to the fraudulent Walmart transaction, the TV station reported.
