MILWAUKEE — A 12-year-old boy died and an 8-year-old boy was injured in a suspected hammer attack Sunday morning in Milwaukee.
The medical examiner identified the victim as Andre R. Smith II, and his grandmother, Illysha McCroy, told WTMJ-TV that a suspect has been arrested, but Milwaukee police have not yet confirmed an arrest.
Multiple neighbors told the TV station that they believe a hammer was used in the fatal attack.
According to Milwaukee police, Smith sustained life-threatening injuries caused by blunt force at around 8:30 a.m. He was transported to an area hospital, where he later died, WDJT reported.
Meanwhile, an 8-year-old boy sustained non-fatal injuries in the attack and is expected to recover, the TV station confirmed.
“From what I heard, directly from (the 8-year-old’s) mouth was, ‘He tried to hit me with the hammer, too,’” neighbor Lewis Williams told WTMJ-TV. “A child. That’s messed up. I really don’t know what to say.”
