According to the Illinois State Police, a trooper responded to a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 90 near Hoffman Estates at about 12:25 a.m. CDT, WBBM-TV reported.

Troopers said the woman’s blue 2003 GMC Yukon rolled over on the road and landed in a ditch, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. All of the children were taken to area hospitals, with five of them “significantly injured,” WGN-TV reported. Four of them have “serious to life-threatening injuries,” troopers said. The other two children were treated for minor injuries, according to the television station.

The children with the most serious injuries ranged in age between 1 and 14 years old, according to WLS-TV.

The woman was also hospitalized and was listed in serious condition, state police said.

The two right lanes of I-90 eastbound near the accident were closed for four hours, WBBM reported. The highway reopened at about 4:26 a.m. CDT, the television station reported.

It is unclear what caused the accident, WLS reported. State police are investigating the case.
