According to the Today Show, on Thursday, Syracuse Police Department officers arrested Elizabeth Sauve and her boyfriend, Quyen Huynh, months after Sauze’s son died from a fentanyl overdose.

The Onondaga County District Attorney told Syracuse.com that Sauve, 31, and Huynh, 28, accidentally gave the 11-month-old a deadly dose of fentanyl while trying to calm him down. Court records obtained by Syracuse.com said that the deadly dose was ingested inside of a Syracuse, New York apartment. Both Sauve and Huynh were accused of bringing fentanyl into the apartment.

According to WTVH, the DA’s office said the incident happened on May 9 and Liam Sauve was taken to the hospital, where he later died. The autopsy and toxicology report from the county medical examiner determined that the boy died from fentanyl toxicity, leading to the arrest of Sauve and Huynh.

Court records said per Syracuse.com that Liam ingested the fentanyl because it was “improperly handled or stored by his mother and her boyfriend.”

The Today Show said that the DA did not confirm if the boy took the fentanyl himself, if his mother gave it to him or if her boyfriend did.

According to Syracuse.com, the DA’s office said that Sauve and Huynh did not plan to kill the child but have been accused of “recklessly causing his death.”

Both Sauve and Huynh have been charged with second-degree manslaughter, according to the Today Show.
