NC man with scuba goggles, suit charged with DUI after crash in Florida

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. — A North Carolina man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in Southwest Florida on Saturday after deputies found him walking near a crash with scuba goggles and a scuba hood, authorities said.

John Clayton Kagi, 28, of Kill Devil Hills, was arrested on charges of DUI alcohol or drugs and DUI damage to property, according to Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office online booking records.

According to deputies, Kagi was detained after crashing his vehicle in Punta Gorda, WBBH reported. Deputies observed Kagu walking near the crash site with scuba goggles and scuba hood, the television station reported.

Authorities had seen a scuba suit and what appeared to be Twisted Tea cans in the car, which was abandoned with its airbags deployed, WBBH reported.

Kagi’s blood-alcohol level was reported to be at 0.180%, according to the sheriff’s office. Drivers in Florida are considered impaired if their BAC level is higher than 0.008%.

Kagi suffered cuts and bruises from the crash and failed DUI field tests, WBBH reported.
