Nearly half of Americans answering a recent survey say they believe both demons and ghosts exist and 20% say they have seen an apparition.
The survey, conducted by YouGov, included 1,000 responses and took in both education levels and political affiliations.
While 31% of survey participants believe that “other supernatural beings” exist, only 9% say they believe in werewolves and 8% believe in vampires.
When it comes to politics, 51% of Republicans say demons are real, while 46% of Independents say they believe in demons. About a third of Democrats say they, also, believe demons exist.
Eleven percent of respondents claim they have had an encounter with a demon.
Women surveyed were more likely to believe in ghosts and demons, and 25% of women said they had encountered a ghost at some time in their lives.
Americans with post-graduate education are the least likely to believe in ghosts, according to the survey.
Yougov polled 1,000 U.S. citizens, aged 18 and over, between Oct. 8 - 12, 2021.
Respondents were selected from YouGov’s opt-in Internet panel using sample matching. A random sample was selected from people by gender, age, race, education, geographic region, and voter registration. The margin of error for the entire sample is approximately 4%.
