NEW YORK — A New York City woman discovered an entire unfinished apartment through an open hole behind her bathroom mirror.
Samantha Hartsoe was trying to find the source of a cold draft blowing through her apartment when she removed the mirror on the wall and found a fairly large, square opening, WNBC reported.
“Curiosity killed the cat, curiosity is going to kill me,” Hartsoe told WNBC. “I can’t not know what’s on the other side of my bathroom.”
The hole opened into an adjacent, unfinished two-story vacant apartment.
Hartsoe showed off the discovery in a series of videos on social media. She did go through the hole and into the unit, armed with a hammer and wearing a face mask and headlamp, only to find bags of trash, an uninstalled toilet and an empty water bottle. She made sure the door to the three-bedroom apartment was locked.
“I was kind of expecting there to be somebody, especially with the water bottle being there,” she told Curbed. “And that definitely put me on edge.”
The front door to it was located somewhere else in the apartment complex. She called maintenance to fix the hole behind her mirror. The management office is expected to investigate.
“I think everybody in New York has such small apartments, you don’t know what you’re going to find and everyone’s hoping for more space,” Hartsoe said.
