The officer with the Biloxi Police Department was among several officers from different agencies responding to an incident near Surf Style on the final day of spring break, the Sun Herald reported.

According to a WLOX-TV reporter who was near the scene, 10 shots were fired.

“It’s been a long weekend,” Biloxi police Chief John Miller told reporters. “We’ve dealt with a lot of incidents this week that we usually don’t have to deal with during spring break, and it culminated tonight in a shooting here, where several people were injured, including a police officer.”

The wounded officer was taken to an area hospital and was treated at an area hospital, Biloxi spokesperson Cecilia Dobbs Walton told reporters. The other victims were also treated at an area hospital.

Miller said all of the victims were stable, with some in serious condition, WLOX reported.

Grandever Everett, a spokesperson for the Biloxi Police Department, said authorities were still trying to determine what led to the shooting.

“We were all outside our vehicles working traffic and it started,” Everett told reporters, according to the Sun Herald. “It was all around us. We had officers responding to multiple locations.”

Biloxi police, the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department, and officers from Gulfport, Ocean Springs, and surrounding agencies assisted after the shooting, the Sun Herald reported.
