Pelosi signals she will recall House for USPS vote this week

WASHINGTON — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., announced Sunday she will call the House back from its August recess to address issues concerning the U.S. Postal Service, multiple news outlets reported.

The House was not slated to return from its annual summer recess for votes until Sept. 14, but legislation that will block the USPS from enforcing any policy changes that have been proposed since Jan. 1 is prompting the emergency action, The New York Times reported.

Pelosi also, in a letter to Democratic colleagues, urged Democrats to participate in a “Day of Action” on Tuesday by showing up in person at their local post offices to ensure mail-in ballots for the 2020 presidential election remain protected, Fox News reported.

A senior Democratic aide told the Times the USPS vote will most likely occur Saturday.

“Lives, livelihoods and the life of our American democracy are under threat from the president. That is why I am calling upon the House to return to session later this week,” Pelosi wrote in her letter to Democratic lawmakers.

Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer, D-Md., is expected to announce the final schedule Monday, the Times reported.

Pelosi’s comments come after she, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., House Oversight Committee Chair Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., and the top Democrat on the Senate Homeland Security Committee, Sen. Gary Peters, D-Mich., demanded the postmaster general and chairman of the U.S. Postal Service testify before Congress on Aug. 24, Fox News reported.
