‘Plane Swap’: Pilots to skydive into each other’s aircraft in livestreamed stunt

Two thrill-seeking pilots are planning to swap their planes in midair – and the daring stunt will be streamed live.

According to USA Today and Flying magazine, Red Bull Air Force members Luke Aikins, 48, and his cousin, 39-year-old Andy Farrington, will attempt the historic feat this weekend in Arizona. The skydivers from Washington state will fly their Cessna 182 planes to 14,000 feet before jumping out, “each leaving behind an empty airplane at 140 mph,” said Hulu, which will broadcast the event live beginning at 7 p.m. EDT Sunday.

“As the riderless machines hurtle toward Earth, the two skymasters will attempt to switch planes and regain command of the controls to successfully pilot the two aircraft to the ground,” the streaming service added in the description of the program, dubbed “Plane Swap.”

In a Monday news release, Red Bull said the stunt, imagined by Aikins, marks “the first time in aviation history a pilot will take off in one plane and land in another.”

“‘Plane Swap’ is the pinnacle of my career, and my goal is to inspire the world and show that anything is possible,” said Aikins, who has logged more than 21,000 skydives and set a world freefall record in 2016 by jumping from 25,000 feet without a parachute. “You can set your mind on something that at times seems wild, crazy and unattainable, but through ambition and creativity, you can make it happen.”

Farrington, meanwhile, has logged more than 27,000 jumps, according to Red Bull.
