CARROLLTON, Texas — Police in Texas have publicly identified a Carrollton officer who was struck and killed by a passing vehicle after he arrived to help a colleague investigate a DWI incident.
According to KXAS and KTVT, the Carrollton Police Department said Officer Steve Nothem was still in his squad car on the President George Bush Turnpike about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday when passing driver Phillip Parker, 82, of Carrollton, struck Nothem’s vehicle. Parker died at the scene, while Nothem was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, the department said in a news release.
Nothem, who joined the department 2 1/2 years ago after four years with Wisconsin’s Grand Chute Police Department, is survived by his wife, three sons and a daughter, the release said. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, authorities said.

Carrollton police said the incident marks the department’s “first line-of-duty death,” according to the release.
The crash remains under investigation, police said.
