Jockey Jose Ortiz won the Preakness for the first time. He had never finished higher than fourth in four previous mounts in the race.

Favorite Epicenter made a hard charge up the rail to finish second. Jose Ortiz guided Early Voting inside before the finish line well ahead of Epicenter, who was also second in the Derby, according to The Associated Press.

The 147th running of the race was at 7:01 p.m. ET at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore on Saturday.

While the Preakness is the second race in the three races that make up the sport’s Triple Crown, there was not a Triple Crown winner in 2022. Rich Strike, who was an 80-1 underdog when he won the 2022 Kentucky Derby two weeks ago, did not run in the 2022 Preakness.

The Preakness was first run in 1873, and is run two weeks after the Kentucky Derby. The fastest time recorded in the race was 1:53.00 by Secretariat in 1973.
