Oscar-winning actor Jeff Bridges announced via Twitter late Monday that he has been diagnosed with lymphoma.
After bracing his fans with a reference to his 1998 cult classic “The Big Lebowski,” Bridges took a somber but hopeful tone.
“Although it is a serious disease, I feel fortunate that I have a great team of doctors and the prognosis is good,” Bridges tweeted.
Bridges, 70, confirmed that he’s “starting treatment,” and the “Crazy Heart” actor promised to keep his followers up to date on his progress, while expressing gratitude for the outpouring of support he has received.
According to USA Today, Bridges has amassed a total of seven Academy Award nominations, including for his work in 1971′s “The Last Picture Show,” 1974′s “Thunderbolt and Lightfoot,” 1984′s “Starman,” 2000′s “The Contender,” 2009′s “Crazy Heart,” 2010′s “True Grit,” and 2016′s “Hell or High Water.”
His role as Otis “Bad” Blake in “Crazy Heart” landed him the Oscar.
A joint statement issued by FX, Touchstone Television, Hulu and FXP stated: “Our thoughts go out to Jeff and his family during this challenging time, and they have our love and support. We wish him a safe and full recovery. … And, as Jeff always says, ‘We are all in this together.’ Jeff, we are all in this together with you.”
Bridges most recently appeared in “Bad Times at the El Royale” in 2018 and is currently in production for the TV miniseries “The Old Man,” Variety reported.
According to the Mayo Clinic, lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system, or part of the body’s “germ-fighting network.” The system includes the lymph nodes, spleen, thymus gland and bone marrow.
