Protesters arrested after throwing cake at King Charles III wax figure

LONDON — Four people were arrested after allegedly attacking a wax figure of King Charles III at Madame Tussauds in London.

The environmental advocacy group “Just Stop Oil” took credit for the vandalism in a news release, saying two of its supporters covered the waxwork model of the king with chocolate cake as they demand that “the government halts all new oil and gas licenses and consents.”

London’s Metropolitan Police said four people were arrested after its officers were called Monday to a report that two people threw food at a statue, CNN reported.

In a video posted to social media, two people dressed in black can be seen approaching the wax figures before removing their shirts to reveal “Just Stop Oil” T-shirts and smearing cake on the statues.

After the protest, the activists addressed the crowd, saying, “The demand is simple. Just Stop Oil is a piece of cake,” The Independent reported.

In a statement to the BBC, Madame Tussauds said, “Our security team dealt with the incident quickly and we are working closely with the Metropolitan Police on this matter. The attraction remains open, with our Royal Family set closed temporarily.”

This is the 24th consecutive day of action the group has taken, having also blocked roads and covered valuable artwork with soup in a string of incidents, The Telegraph reported.

In its news release, Just Stop Oil said it intends to continue its protests, saying, “expect us every day and anywhere. This is an act of resistance against a criminal government and their genocidal death project. Our supporters will be returning — today, tomorrow and the next day — and the next day after that — and every day until our demand is met: no new oil and gas in the UK.”
