Recall alert: dōTERRA recalls 1.3 million bottles of essential oils amid poisoning risk

PLEASANT GROVE, Utah — A Utah-based multi-level marketing company is recalling more than 1 million bottles of three of its essential oils because the products lack child-resistant packaging and could result in poisonings.

The recall affects 1.3 million bottles of dōTERRA’s Deep Blue, PastTense and Deep Blue Touch oils. The products were sold online at doterra.com between September 2018 and September 2020 and ranged in price from $26 to $79 for the 10-milileter bottles, according to a news release issued by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Per the commission, the Poison Prevention Packaging Act requires all products containing methyl salicylate to be packaged in child-resistant packaging, and the affected products pose a poisoning risk if the bottles’ contents are applied to the skin or swallowed by children.

No injuries related to the recall have been reported to date, the CPSC confirmed.

Consumers are instructed to place affected products in a safe place out of reach of children and to contact dōTERRA for a free replacement of similar value.
