Recall alert: Nearly 200K ceiling fans sold at Home Depot recalled after blades detach

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — More than 190,000 ceiling fans sold exclusively at Home Depot in the United States and Canada are being recalled after reports that blades are detaching from the fans when in use.

Fort Lauderdale-based King of Fans issued the voluntary recall Dec. 23 for its Hampton Bay 54-inch Mara indoor/outdoor ceiling fans after receiving 47 reports of detaching blades, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Two consumers reported being struck by detached fan blades, while four consumers reported property damage caused by the defect, the company stated in a news release posted to the CPSC’s website.

In a separate release issued to customers, King of Fans attributed the fan malfunctions to “an isolated manufacturing defect with the assembly of the fan blade’s locking clip to the fan flywheel, where one of the two screws retaining the locking clip is not adequately secured to the flywheel.”

The fans were sold at Home Depot stores nationwide and online between April and October 2020 for about $150. The majority of the compromised fans – about 182,000 – were sold in the United States, with another roughly 8,800 sold in Canada, according to the CPSC.

A Home Depot spokesperson told Fox Business that about 80,000 of the fans were sold before being pulled from stores.

The recalled fans include those with matte white, matte black, black and polished nickel finishes, the CPSC stated.

“If consumers observe blade movement or uneven gaps between the blades and fan body or movement of the clip during inspection, consumers should immediately contact King of Fans for a free replacement ceiling fan,” the CPSC added.
