Citing faulty headlights that could catch fire, Toyota announced that it is recalling more than 158,000 Tundra pickup trucks.
The car manufacturer said the 158,489 affected models are from 2018 to 2021, according to Consumer Reports. Only trucks with halogen headlights are included in the recall, Toyota said. The trucks were manufactured between June 6, 2017, and March 24, 2021, the automaker said.
The problem that led to the recall was faulty wiring that incorrectly illuminates the pickup’s high- and low-beam bulb, according to Consumer Reports. The bulbs can fail if they remain lit for an extended period of time, and in some cases, the headlight assembly can overheat and catch fire.
In documents provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Toyota said it was aware of 18 field reports and 47 warranty claims about headlight failures. Nine of those trucks experienced fires caused by the headlights.
Toyota dealerships will replace the faulty wiring and any damaged part of the headlight assembly at no cost to consumers, according to Consumer Reports.
Toyota will contact the owners of affected vehicles by mail beginning in October, according to Consumer Reports. Vehicle owners can also contact Toyota directly at 800-331-4331.
