BOX ELDER, S.D. — A South Dakota woman is facing charges of manslaughter and child abuse in connection with the death of a 2-year-old girl.
According to the Rapid City Journal and KELO-TV, the incident occurred Sunday afternoon at a mobile home park in Box Elder. Precious Delacey Black Elk, 22, called Box Elder police about 2 p.m. to say the toddler could not breathe, the Journal reported. Officers and emergency crews who responded to the scene discovered the child bruised, “unresponsive and beyond resuscitation,” according to the newspaper.
Medical examiners later conducted an autopsy, which ruled the death a homicide; however, a family member claimed the child had suffered the injuries during a recent brain surgery, the Journal reported.
Black Elk was arrested and remains held on a $100,000 bond, according to the newspaper.
