The Internal Revenue Service announced Tuesday that it would be sending out Economic Impact Payment checks, also known as stimulus checks, to people whose portion of the checks first sent out in April was used to pay past-due child support.
When the original stimulus checks were issued, the agency erroneously withheld the checks of those who owed past-due child support payments. Instead, the money was applied to the past-due portion of the child payments.
According to the IRS, checks will be “mailed to any eligible spouse who submitted Form 8379, Injured Spouse Allocation, along with their 2019 federal income tax return, or in some cases, their 2018 return.”
If you are owed a check, you do not have to do anything to get it. The IRS has the information it needs.
According to the agency, 50,000 Americans will be getting a check. The IRS “does not yet have a timeframe but will automatically issue the portion of the EIP that was applied to the other spouse’s debt at a later date.”
The payments will be in the form of physical checks, not direct deposits into checking accounts.
