HOBBS, N.M. — Prosecutors say a teenager has been charged with attempted murder and felony child abuse after leaving her newborn baby in a dumpster in Hobbs, New Mexico.
The 18-year-old woman reportedly told police she gave birth to the child but then left it in a dumpster outside a store, KRQE reported.
In a Facebook post, the Hobbs police department said they arrested Alexis Avila after reviewing surveillance video that allegedly showed the incident, and said she confessed to them when they confronted her.
The surveillance video allegedly shows Avila leaving the dumpster at 2 p.m. Friday afternoon, then six hours later three people are seen searching through the dumpster and pulling out a black bag, KOB-TV reported. Seconds later the video shows the woman pull the newborn out of the bag, the station reported.
The man who runs the store where the baby was left, Joe Imbriale, told KOAT he plans to start a GoFundMe account for the child. He told the station “I want this baby to know it is loved. That just because your mom did that does not mean you are not loved.”
