KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Now that’s fast.
A Tennessee pitcher set a college baseball record last weekend when he threw a 105.5 mph fastball, WATE-TV and Sports Illustrated are reporting.
The pitch came during the eighth inning Sunday as Volunteers reliever Ben Joyce faced Cole Foster of the Auburn Tigers, according to WATE. Joyce, a redshirt junior nicknamed the “Volunteer Fireman,” bested his own record to deliver the fastest recorded pitch in the history of college baseball, the news outlets reported.

The throw wasn’t just fast by college standards. Joyce’s pitch was only 0.3 mph shy of the Major League record set by Aroldis Chapman in 2010, according to the news outlets.
The No. 1 Vols went on to beat the Tigers 5-3, according to ESPN.
