San Antonio police said the father awoke around 4:29 a.m. to see the 29-year-old man vandalizing the car and went out to confront him, KSAT reported.

The car was parked on the street out front of the home, police said. The father and daughter both confronted the ex-boyfriend.

The ex-boyfriend then opened an iron gate at the front of the home and charged at the father, KSAT reported. The father, who was armed, told the ex-boyfriend to leave before firing a shot, striking him.

Officers arrived to find the ex-boyfriend on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene, KABB reported.

The father was detained by police. He told investigators he had felt threatened and had the gun to protect himself. He has not been charged.
