The slate includes artists from various genres — not just rock — including heavy metal, pop, rap and country.
Up for the honors this year are:
- Judas Priest
- Pat Benatar
- Rage Against the Machine
- Dionne Warwick
- Carly Simon
- New York Dolls
- Duran Duran
- MC5
- Dolly Parton
- Lionel Richie
- Fela Kuti
- Eurythmics
- A Tribe Called Quest
- Eminem
- DEVO
- Beck
- Kate Bush
Artists must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years before being nominated. This is the first year of eligibility for Eminem. Among the 17 nominees, seven are appearing for the first time, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame said in a news release.
“This year’s ballot recognizes a diverse group of incredible artists, each who has had a profound impact on the sound of youth culture,” John Sykes, chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, said. “Their music not only moved generations, but also influenced the sound of countless artists that followed.”
To get the list of nominees, ballots are sent to more than 1,000 artists, historians and members of the music industry across the world. Then once the list is compiled, fans get their say.
You can cast your vote for up to five nominees every day until April 29, by visiting the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s website.
The top five artists will be entered as a “fans’ ballot” and will be tallied with the other ballots to come up with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2022.
The induction ceremony will take place in the fall but the new members will be announced in May.
