SAN ANTONIO — Four kittens were rescued after being abandoned on the side of a San Antonio road, cold and hungry and shielded by elements only by a paper bag, animal rescue officials said.
“Tossed to the curb like trash,” the City of San Antonio Animal Care Services wrote in a Facebook post on Wednesday. “Dumping pets anywhere, even near our shelter, is not OK.”
The kittens were found last week by a San Antonio Animal Care Services employee, who noticed the bag while driving into work, KSAT-TV reported. The employee investigated after hearing “tiny meows” and found the kittens inside a small box, according to WOAI-TV.
“Who knows what would have happened to these sweet little kittens if we hadn’t thought to look,” San Antonio Animal Care Services said Wednesday in a Facebook post.
Officials at the rescue center said the kittens were “thirsty and cold to the touch when they first arrived,” KSAT reported.
A foster home was found for the felines within two hours after they were welcomed at Animal Care Services, according to the television station. They will be ready for adoption in a few weeks through San Antonio Pets Alive, Animal Care Services officials said.
“Puppy and kitten season is here, and this is a stern reminder to please do the right thing if you find yourself unable to care for a pet,” Animal Care Services wrote on Facebook. “If you need help, ask for it. Use available community resources to try and re-home your unwanted pet.”
