BOSTON — Video of an escalator malfunction that injured dozens in Boston in late September was released Monday, showing the chaos that erupted in the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s Back Bay Station as people scrambled for safety.
WFXT-TV obtained a copy of the video, which shows the escalator reversing direction on Sept. 26 and speeding up at accelerating rates, from the transit authority.
The video also shows people, more than a dozen of whom sustained injuries, tumbling backward and piling up at the bottom of the moving staircase, the TV station reported.
Nine people required hospitalization following the malfunction, and at least two families are suing both the transit authority and the company that maintains the station’s escalators, NBC News reported.
According to the transit authority, the escalator involved in the Back Bay Station incident remained closed as of Monday, WFXT reported.
