Watch: Molotov cocktail attack on Brooklyn deli caught on video; suspect in custody

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Dramatic surveillance video captured inside a Brooklyn deli shows a man hurl incendiary devices through the business’s front door on Saturday, causing substantial damage.

New York City Fire Department officials confirmed the attack occurred just before 8 a.m. and that police arrested 38-year-old Joel Mangal of Brooklyn shortly after the incident, WABC-TV reported.

FDNY confirmed via social media that Mangal was arrested “for the alleged use of improvised incendiary devices, commonly known as ‘Molotov Cocktails.’”

Police also confirmed to WABC-TV that Mangal is accused of slashing a 23-year-old man in the hand before fleeing on foot.

According to WNBC, one person is visible in the video stumbling through the “floor-to-ceiling flames” to flee through the deli’s front door, while another person can be seen hopping over the counter to escape.

One person was treated on the scene for non-life-threatening injuries, FDNY confirmed.

Mangal faces a host of charges, including arson, assault, reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal mischief, WNBC reported.

A second video captured the attack from the sidewalk outside the deli and appears to show the moment the attacker lit the device and tossed it inside the business, WPIX-TV reported.

The second video also shows the suspect light a second Molotov cocktail to throw inside the deli, but a man standing on the sidewalk knocks it out of the suspect’s hand, “sending the fiery explosive to the ground,” WNBC reported.

“Fortunately, there was no loss of life here,” Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said in a prepared statement. “FDNY will continue to work alongside local, state and federal partners to bring to justice those who use fire as a weapon against New Yorkers.”
