Woman arrested for reckless driving took selfie during traffic stop, deputies say

BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. — Deputies said that a woman who was arrested for dangerous driving paused during the traffic stop to take a photo.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that its deputies were stationed in Bonita Springs at a hurricane safety checkpoint at 12:30 a.m. Monday, when a vehicle sped through and didn’t stop, “putting deputies’ lives in danger.” The vehicle then continued to travel down the road before making a U-turn and speeding through the checkpoint in the opposite direction.

Deputies said that a district sergeant got into his patrol vehicle and attempted to stop the vehicle, which continued to drive erratically, slowing down, speeding up, and swerving.

The driver, identified as Shelby Peters, finally stopped. As the sergeant called for backup before approaching the vehicle, he noted she was taking a “selfie” during the stop, deputies said in the news release.

When the deputy got out of his cruiser, Peters drove away, WBBH reported.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office said that the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, which has deputies in the area assisting with hurricane relief efforts, was able to eventually stop Peters.

“This is yet another example of how teamwork led to putting a criminal behind bars, where they belong,” Sheriff Carmine Marceno said. “This woman’s actions behind the wheel show that she truly has no regard for the safety of others.”

Peters was charged with fleeing and eluding, driving under the influence and curfew violation, WBBH reported.

Peters was released from the Lee County Jail on a $1,500 bond, according to online jail records.
