WAYNE COUNTY, Ga. — A detention officer in a South Georgia county was literally stripped of his authority after being arrested on charges of supplying inmates with contraband, authorities said.
A Facebook video posted by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office showed the uniform shirt of Dayton Beasley being snipped off with a pair of scissors while he stood handcuffed, WJCL reported. The sheriff’s office later deleted the video, but the television station captured the video and posted it on its Facebook page.
Beasley’s arrest was the result of a two-week investigation into contraband items at the Wayne County Jail, conducted by the sheriff’s office and the Jesup Police Department, WSAV reported. According to a news release, Beasley was charged with violation of oath of office, trading with inmates without consent of the warden or superintendent, and crossing the guard line with a controlled substance.
After the arrest, the sheriff’s office posted a video of a sheriff’s deputy snipping off Beasley’s work shirt, WTOC reported. It was taken down and the sheriff’s office issued an apology.
In the 76-second video, the deputy cuts Beasley’s work shirt off.
“Now, turn around here,” the official says in the video. “You come to our jail and do this, this is what it’s going to get you.
“You are a disgrace to this uniform, and you need to go to jail for good.”
The sheriff’s office said the video was originally posted as “a show of transparency.”
“We felt that everyone wanted to know what was going on and feel this video did just that,” the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post on Sunday. There was no property damaged that belonged to the young man shown and as far as embarrassed, I am sure he was embarrassed from the get-go.”
According to the post, Wayne County Sheriff R.E. “Chuck” Moseley did not know the video would be posted to social media.
“For the ones that supported the post, thank you for your support and for the ones that opposed the post, I apologize,” the post read.
The sheriff’s office said other arrests were expected as a result of the investigation, WJCL reported.
