OLYMPIA, Wa. — Early special election results show that Tumwater approved a tax hike that will give it the title of highest sales tax in Thurston county.
The Olympian newspaper reports (http://bit.ly/1PXzGzv ) that 68 percent of Tumwater voters approved an increase in the local sales tax by 0.2 percentage points for 10 years. The 8.9 cents per dollar tax will generate an extra $812,000 annually for road repairs and curb and sidewalk upgrades. The tax was billed as a way to raise money for transportation projects.
Had the tax failed at the polls, the city could have sought a license tab fee from residents.
The results will be certified May 12.
