WATCH: Boeing pilots practice almost-vertical takeoff

NOW PLAYING ABOVE

WASHINGTON — As Washington crews rehearsed for a flying display to be performed at the 2015 Pairs airshow, expert pilots made an incredible takeoff.

A Boeing 787 Dreamliner went straight up from the runway.

Boeing showed off one of its newest models in a YouTube video ahead of the show on June 15.

Boeing has invested more than $30 billion developing its new 787 Dreamliner -- one of the most advanced planes ever, CBS News reports.

"The 787 Dreamliner applies breakthrough technologies to an all-new airplane design," Boeing's website says about the plane. "The advanced features of the 787 increase efficiency, simplify airplane ownership and operation, and significantly improve the air travel experience."

The new plane is 20 feet longer and able to carry more passengers than the original 787-8.

Dreamliners were grounded worldwide last year.  One plane suffered a battery fire and another had to make an emergency landing because pilots smelled something burning.
